The Hague
Plastic waste represents one of the biggest waste problems of our time. Much plastic waste is now thrown away or burned. This has to change! By giving it a second life, plastic waste gets economic value again. The Hague actively connects with businesses to show cost-effective ways of separating and recycling plastic waste. With the PlastiCity project the region is building a plastics ecosystem and developing circulair value chains, from waste collectors to recyclers and product makers.
Our focus
The Hague, with its many offices, retail and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), is scaling up it’s plastic recycling efforts. Traditionally without a large manufacturing industry, the city focuses on pioneering new innovative solutions with local businesses and makers, such as the Resource bike. With this bike, The Hague collects plastic waste from local businesses. At the moment a variety of 70 businesses have joined the project, such as beach pavilions, a hospital and a flower shop.

From April 2022
PlastiCity The Hague works together with beach pavilions and small/medium businesses in The Hague to collect their plastic waste by bike. This last project year PlastiCity The Hague focusses on rigid plastics.

Launch of Plastic hub
2022 (date unknown)
At the moment, The Hague works on the first building blocks of the Plasticity hub: one physical location for all steps in the plastic recycling process: waste collection, processing and recycling. Strengthened by a digital infrastructure to share ideas and get access to open data. Before the end of the year, the first building blocks of the physical hub are operational to be used for demonstration and creation of circular economy activity for plastics. The hub will be located at an industrial area, easy to reach for businesses. It will be a place for stakeholders to come together and co-create. Ambition is to set up a long term hub and encourage all businesses in The Hague to separate their plastics.

Our aim is to introduce new sustainable logistics concepts for the circular city. In 2020 the City of The Hague acquired a Resource bike for the collection of the so-called lost plastics, as part of the PlastiCity project. It can collect and compress all types of plastics, except hard plastics such as PVC pipes. With a few simple adjustments it is also possible to use this bicycle for the collection of other industrial waste streams.
Specifications
The Resource bike has a maximum range of 150-200 kilometers, depending on the load. It has a capacity of almost 7m³, or 190 kg of plastic waste Equipped with an electric compactor, which can reduce the volume of plastic commercial waste by more than 40% to 50%.
Labelling and recognizing plastic
Better separation will increase the quality of the collected plastic waste and thus the chance of recycling. Therefore the Resource bike is equipped with a module to label and recognize plastic. This allows the project to give companies specific advice on how to (better) separate their plastic waste.
